“How Sha’ul Was Misinterpreted by the Churches”

Shalom, seekers of truth. Among all the misunderstood voices in Scripture, few have been as misquoted and misapplied as the writings of Sha’ul (Paul). In the hands of those without discernment, his deep revelations were twisted into lawlessness. But those with Ruach-led eyes will see — Sha’ul never broke Torah. He upheld it through Messiah.

Kepha (2 Peter) 3:16 says of Sha’ul’s letters: “...in which are some hard to understand, which those who are untaught and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do also the other Scriptures.” ➡️ Misinterpreting Sha’ul leads not to liberty — but destruction.

📜 MESSAGE

The modern Church has built an entire doctrine of “grace vs. law” based on their surface-level reading of Sha’ul. But this is not new. Even in Kepha’s day, his epistles were already being twisted. The result? A religion that claims to follow Messiah while rejecting His very Torah.

Sha’ul never preached a gospel of lawlessness. He never said the Torah was abolished. In fact, in Romans 3:31 he says, “Do we then nullify the Torah through belief? Let it not be! On the contrary, we establish the Torah.” Sha’ul upheld the Torah — not as a means of salvation, but as the righteous path for those already redeemed by faith. The same way Abraham was justified by belief — and still obeyed (Genesis 26:5).

What the Church misunderstood is this: Sha’ul contrasted works of legalism (man-made efforts to earn righteousness) with true obedience out of faith. He warned against trusting in circumcision or traditions apart from Messiah. But he never discarded the commandments. He followed them. He taught them. He lived them.

To understand Sha’ul correctly is to walk the narrow path: belief in Yahusha — and obedience to YHVH’s commands. Any gospel that cancels obedience is not the Good News — it’s a counterfeit. It is time to untwist the letters of Sha’ul. For a misread apostle has led to a misled Church.

📖 COMMON MISINTERPRETATIONS VS. TRUTH

  1. Misinterpretation: “We are not under the law, but under grace” (Romans 6:14)
Truth: Sha’ul meant we are not under the penalty of Torah due to Messiah — but grace empowers us to obey it (see Romans 6:15).
  2. Misinterpretation: “Christ is the end of the law” (Romans 10:4)
Truth: The Greek word for "end" is telos, meaning goal or purpose. Yahusha is the goal of the Torah, not its abolishment.
  3. Misinterpretation: “Let no one judge you in food or drink...” (Colossians 2:16)
Truth: Sha’ul was defending Torah-keepers from pagan criticism — not abolishing the Sabbath or clean food laws.
  4. Misinterpretation: “Why do you turn again to weak and miserable principles?” (Galatians 4:9)
Truth: He was rebuking Gentiles for reverting to pagan rituals — not for keeping Torah.
  5. Misinterpretation: “All things are lawful for me” (1 Corinthians 6:12)
Truth: Sha’ul was quoting the Corinthians’ excuse — and immediately correcting it. Torah still defines what is lawful.

📚 STUDY SECTION

  1. 2 Kepha (Peter) 3:15–17 “...the writings of Sha’ul... which the untaught twist to their own destruction.”
  2. Romans 3:31 “Do we nullify the Torah through faith? Let it not be! We establish it.”
  3. Acts 24:14 “I worship the Elohim of my fathers, believing all that has been written in the Torah and the Prophets...”
  4. 1 Corinthians 7:19 “Circumcision is none, and uncircumcision is none — but guarding the commands of Elohim does matter!”
  5. Galatians 2:16 “A man is not declared right by works of Torah, but through belief in Yahusha Messiah...”

🤲 PRAYER

Abba YHVH, open our eyes to understand Your Word rightly. Remove the veil of confusion from our hearts. Let us no longer twist Scripture to fit our comfort, but align ourselves fully with Your truth. May we believe like Abraham — and walk in obedience as true children of promise. Let the writings of Sha’ul be a guide, not a stumbling block. Baruch YHVH! 🤲🏻

📣 REMINDER

Not all teachings are true — and not all interpretations are innocent. Sha’ul was a Torah-keeping emissary of Messiah. If we twist his words, we twist our walk. Return to the true path. Discern deeply. The Spirit and the Torah agree. And ALWAYS read scriptures in context BEFORE interpreting it your way.
